RAIZ DIABOLICA - reviews!

mylastchapter. net
I've never heard of Thousandswilldie before, but the name alone gives me good vibes. But after just a few minutes (which actually means 6-7 tracks) I can tell you this is not for the stubborn and weak-minded individual that has difficulty to accept progression. Each and every song is jam-packed with intensity, wicked screaming and brutal blasting. The insanity is absolutely pouring from every crack, and the intensity is so extreme you'll think they've hit the brown note. Agoraphobic Nosebleed is an act that instantly comes to mind, with the addition of some Aussie acts like The Kill, Captain Cleanoff etc. With the majority of songs being 20-30 seconds long you'll find yourself in a grindcore whirlwind, getting the shit kicked out of you by the crowd of punks and metalheads moshing like crazy. And this is a band I imagine should be experienced live, 'cause with the intensity and ferocity the present here it would be cause for a magnificent moshpit. With the exception of the three ambient tracks (cleverly named I, II and III, with II being the most annoying one) Thousandswilldie offers a powerful onslaught of hardcore-ish grindcore flirting with metal.

The word 'progression' is certain to pop up once again as it's time for the Italian lads Psychofagist to take over the stereo and offer us their variant of grindcore. And here the tunes take on an entirely different approach, with three tracks clocking in at ten minutes (versa Thousandswilldie's sixteen tracks clocking in at nine minutes), and a much more experimental touch. Imagine the most out-there parts of Cephalic Carnage, then add the early sound of The Dillinger Escape Plan and the hardcore of Converge, and you have a pretty good idea of what Psychofagist sound like. Eventhough I loved their self-titled 2004 album I have a hard time digesting this; this is too experimental for me. There are hardly ten seconds that goes by without a tempo change. That would be fine and all, since the tracks are very intense, but when you add the saxophone it becomes just a wee bit too much. The vocals are really good, and adds a desperate edge to the otherwise just plain chaotic music. And if this all wasn't progressive enough they end with a track filled with even more weirdness, and even clean vocals.
Too much for me, but if the description sounds interesting my advice is that you to check it out, 'cause it's definitely intense and insane'

collective zine

Thousandswilldie kick this thing off with the first of three eerie electronic interludes, carving up the unabashed violence of their fluid yet muscular grindcore without necessarily providing the space you need to breathe. It might be less of a flat-out wall of speed than their 7" for RSR but the songwriting has developed and they're still not fucking around, everything taut, steroid-pumped and viciously inventive with only one song deigning to break the 60-second barrier. That'll be an uphill battle for Romans Psychofagist, then, who're left to potter around, mop up the blood and sweep up the busted teeth with their gobbledegook grind, chopping and changing between styles every time one of them has a fresh idea and throwing sax squeals and cello honks into the mix alongside the regular metal instrumentation. Of their three numbers, one is a Tomahawk cover and that just about says it all – reliably bonkers but not up to snuff when compared to the unbridled hostility of their Californian buddies.

A split of 2 bands you probably never heard of: Thousandswilldie and Psychofagist, with the emphasis on "you" because I've been following the US grinders in TWD since their first demo, which totally rocked my socks. And more of the same can be found on this splitCD, TWD brings grindcore with a good balance between what's modern and what's considered as old school. The 16 tracks they bring are better produced than the demo I have but it's not overly produced, they have a rather raw and uncompromising sound, which fits the band of course. Next up is the Italian Psychofagist. Somewhat different from TWD, since they like their grind mixed with all that is experimental. Bands and persons like Naked City, John Zorn, Mike Patton, Cephalic Carnage and (early) Dillinger Escape Plan will surely have influenced these psychos and judging from these songs they don't have to be scared to try to reach for the same levels the aforementioned bands did.

The only negative aspect about this record are the gaps between the songs. They cut down the brutality of the bands, especially TWD. Nevertheless this split is a nice discovery for those who don't know the bands and a nice addition to the collection for those that already own stuff from Psychofagist and Thousandswilldie.
Make sure to keep an eye on the bands and the label! Pretty sure they have some other cool splits lined up…

I'd say the second flyer is the best one of those shows but there are a couple great bands on the last flyer making me scratch my head at their inclusion on what looks like a mostly crappy show.

If that last show was somewhere in NC or in Richmond I would probably check it out because there are also bands I have a small amount of interest in seeing but I get the feeling a lot of time would be spent standing outside. But I will agree that all the shows have their redeeming qualities.
