Probably because Pantera doesn't fit into just one metal genre and one metal genre alone that they like.

people hate him because pantera ripped off exhorder after beinga glam band and they influenced all kinds of bad nu-metal and metalcore bands. that's why people hate dimebag.

NOTE: this isn't my opinion of dimebag. this is among the reasons why other people hate him.

I'm a fan of both Dime and Pantera. I don't really give a shit if other people think I'm un-tr00 for it.

i've done my research on this whole "Pantera ripped of Exhorder" crap, and while maybe back in the day the style played by Pantera sounded like Exhorder, its a bit ridiculous to say they ripped them off. why isnt Exhorder more widely known if they are so revolutionary? there is a fine line between influence and plagiarism, i'd definitely classify that as influence.

i stand by that without Pantera, At the Gates and Iron Maiden there wouldn't be Metalcore or alot of bands like that style, but look at all the great bands that came out of those bands...
i think that darrel was a great guitar player for what he did and how he did it.. but i believe he is over rated.

It was a shame that Dimebag got iced the way he did...the guy who did it was a piece of shit. But regardless..i always thought Pantera were cheesy.

and as far as how he went out... we all gotta die somehow and that shit was awful but how fucking metal is it that he died in a hail of bullets playing onstage with his band... better than dying in a bed.

Anyone into metal of any kind should just face this fact.
Are there better players out there? Sure, but he had a signature style, and thats a rare quality to find, in any musical form.

Dime never claimed to be the greatest guitar player in the world; he usually pointed out the guitarists he admired and looked up to in his interviews. He was up there on stage, or in the studio, he was having a good time, especially on stage. He was playing the music he loved to play and had a damn good time doing it. So maybe he didn't put on the "metal face" and tried to act super evil and kvlt and n3kr0 and br00tal and all that other bullshit that so many guys try to do. He didn't have to; he went out on stage with a smile and a positive attitude, and still played some of the heaviest riffs I've ever heard. Dime loved what he did, and it showed in his performance. That's why I have so much admiration and respect for Dimebag Darrel, and no amount of bashing on this forum is going to make me think otherwise.

Why did Pantera get all the recognition, if Exhorder was so good, that Pantera needed to copy them?

Exhorder - Get Rude, Demo, 1986

This is the first of the two demos Exhorder released in the 80's that Phil Anselmo, apparently, spread like the plague throughout Texas and whilst Anselmo and co. were buffing up their codpieces and teasing their locks, Exhorder were making the first steps towards their breathtaking thrash intensity on Slaughter In The Vatican and The Law.

All the tracks on here are well executed and show a good example of their infancy. The trademark scratchy production is pretty prevalent and the guitar tone is nowhere near the realms of trouser soiling brutality on Slaughter In The Vatican but from the demo its clear to see they were a promising unit.

Bestial Noises lends the demo a dangerous , if somewhat of a cliche, air and Wake The Dead is a steady instrumental which plods and darts away with velocity as does the follow up "Ripping Flesh" which takes a huge leaf out of the Dark Angel book of a "Thousand neck snapping riffs a minute and lightning fast vocals".

The remaining 3 tracks are all competently delivered however Exhorders famed asset of the suffocatingly heavy guitar tone isnt on show and so the tracks lack that extra kick. Without it they sound like another band from that period who tried to recreate their own "Darkness Descends" i.e Sacrifice (Can), Sadus, Devastation.

Another factor which sets it apart from the Vatican album and The Law is Kyle Thomas's Vocals which are a style very similar to that guy from Sacrifice (Can) and dont really show traces of the unique style he later innovated with and Phil Anselmo if not ripped off, took ENORMOUS cues from.

Overall a half decent first step and theyd improve on their next demo.


Exhorder - Slaughter In The Vatican, Demo, 1988

This is what made Roadrunner Records resoundingly clear their bowels and bladders, stand up and take notice and throw some benjamins at the violent Thrash quartet from New Orleans to produce the Vatican album.

The tracks on here are a big step from the scratchy beginnings of the "Get Rude" demo and the jaw-dropping riffwork is beginning to make it mark, although the guitar tone wouldn't be prevalent until Scott Burns' godly intervention.

This sounds more like ground-breaking Thrash rather than their run of the mill, 2nd rate Dark Angel beginnings.

Homicide kicks it off with their trademark frenetic aggression alongside neck-snap-able riffs and Thomas' vocals which are pretty ordinary on this demo and the first. There's no real glimpses of his legendary style (as Phillip Anselmo can testify!) he later used on their 2 albums which was a brilliant and unique compliment to the thrashing. On here he sounds like your Average Joe Thrash vocalist.

Desecrator and Death In Vain follow up Homicide with their renowned charms and competent riffs throughout although not as penetrating and devastating as they are on their albums due to... yes you've guessed it... THAT guitar tone. Their biggest asset and what makes the difference between them being a 2nd rate Dark Angel clones (ala Viking and Sadus) and them producing some of the best offerings to the table of Heavy Metal.

The rest of the demo is competent and decent but lacks that extra kick that takes it over the hill of true genius and when Exhorder's material was touched by the hand of god a.k.a Scott Burns they were able to achieve that.

Still a decent demo and well worth checking out for fans interested in the roots of one of the best and to this day, most underrated bands in the history of Metal.

Vocalist Kyle Thomas of the much-missed New Orleans metallers Exhorder, cited by many as the originators of the riff-heavy power-groove approach popularized by Pantera, has spoken out about his group's alleged influence on the latter band the belief by some that Pantera "ripped off" Exhorder in order to attain their early major label success.

"Although it is flattering to know that there are still plenty listeners that still care about Exhorder so intensely, I have to say that there is something that kind of gets under my skin," Thomas wrote in an open letter to the Exhorder fans. "After all of these years of Exhorder's dormancy and Pantera's fruition, I can honestly say that I just don't care about 'the feud' or whatever you want to call it. To be frank, I'm so fucking tired of seeing our name handcuffed to theirs. I cannot, nor would I even dream of attempting to, change our devoted fans' opinions, because history is what it is, but I do believe Exhorder deserves a place in metal history outside of Pantera's financial shadow. I know those guys even though I never see or talk to them anymore for no particular reason, and what is true is they worked a lot harder than we did to earn their success. Maybe things would have been as good for us had we toured more and recorded more. We'll never know.

Darrel was cool as fuck. Who cares if Pantera sucked? I like a lot of people who are in bands I don't like. Who gives a shit what band someone is in?! Being in a band is the stupidest thing you could possibly do with your life anyways (trust me, I know).
Darrel wasa good guy and a whole lot of fun to party with. That's all that really matters.

Oh, and for the record, even though Pantera looked glam in the 80's, they played way heavier than they looked. Even when they had their hair teased up to the sky, they were playing Metallica and Anthrax covers.

I would much much rather hang out drinking with Darrel than hang out talking guitar theory with (yawn) Chuck.

i think mustaine was looking for some attention when he said pantera stole his and James' guitar playing style because it... well.. sounds nothing like it and dime was a way more fluid player than either of them... espicially james.

Uh...let's not get into lyrical content and song titles, because Exhorder was just as terrible as Pantera in that department. Some of their lyrics are downright laughable.

Phil Anselmo never really wrote anything meaningful. We could always take a look at some of the other projects he has been in and compare the lyrical content.

Superjoint Ritual makes me laugh. Phil is playing this tough guy image too much with this band.

Down is like a Black Sabbath tribute band as far as sound. At least this is a rock band.

One thing you have to admit.

Dimebag was a one of a kind person and musician. It's only fitting he had a one of a kind death and that death occured while doing what made him so unique.
