Right, I guess I should have asked "How's the public asking working for you?"

Obviously it sounds like you're on the ball with networking, and even a bit of cold-calling is necessary from time to time (i.e. "We'll be in your city something time during X week and I see you've booked Y and Z in the past, any chance you might set something up for us and them?")... On the other hand, even if it's informal, posting about wanting on a show put together by a booker you don't know is a cold-call in a public forum, no less... And having booked shows, I'd say it's not so much the asking to be put on A show that's an annoyance, but being asked to be put on a PARTICULAR show. Unless the promoter is specifically asking for band submissions, when they post show info, chances are they're really not interested in volunteers, even if the lineup is incomplete.

Maybe I'm just projecting from my own experiences, but I found it really irksome to have to conjure up a polite brush-off for bands I didn't even want to book in the first place, in the midst of trying to get people interested in the show itself.
