I don't think the government coming out and stating they've been hiding the fact that there's aliens would incite mass panic anymore than the whole country watching two skyscrapers fall down on live tv did.

I know there's a quote in some movie that "a person can take it, people are panicky." (lol it's from men in black, thanks google). But I think it's the opposite. A person is likely to freak the fuck out.....but people as a whole would continue on. Just look at any natural disaster or great tradgedy. Some people go batshit out of their minds. But society as a whole, can take it.
